Academia Sinica President Chi-Huey Wong headed for Japan on January 23, 2008 to sign a general collaboration agreement with Riken President Noyori Ryoji. The signing ceremony was held at the RIKEN Tokyo Liaison Office.

RIKEN (Institute of Physical and Chemical Research) is a preeminent research institute in Japan and holds a similar status to the Academia Sinica in Taiwan. The agreement will cover the exchange of research members and student collaboration on various subjects ranging from chemical and physical sciences to life sciences.

Academia Sinica’s President Emeritus, Nobel laureate Yuan-Tseh Lee, was also present to witness the important event. An initial exchange letter was signed by President Emeritus Lee with RIKEN six years ago.

RIKEN was first organized in 1917 as a private research foundation, and reorganized in 2003 as an independent administrative institution under Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The institution carries out high level experimental and research work over a wide range of fields, including physics, chemistry, medical science, biology, and engineering. The institute covers the entire spectrum of research from basic research to practical application.
